New Delhi: AICC general secretary Digvijaya Singh on Monday triggered a controversy on Twitter accusing the Telangana police of running a fake ISIS website to trap Muslim youth.

Digvijaya in his tweet said, “The issue is whether Telangana Police should be trapping Muslim Youths in becoming ISIS modules by posting inflammatory information?

Is it ethical? Is it moral? Has KCR authorised Telangana Police to trap Muslim Youths and encourage them to join ISIS?”

Referring to the terror group by its other name, the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant, he said KCR should order an investigation and punish those responsible for the “heinous crime” and if police were following his orders, he should take responsibility and resign.

This invited an instant reaction from IT Minister K T Rama Rao who demanded Digvijaya to take back his words or the government could go ahead and initiate action against him.

Calling it as “Most irresponsible & reprehensible thing coming from a former CM,” KTR in his tweet said, “request you to withdraw these comments unconditionally or provide evidence.”

Later talking to media in Delhi KTR, said it was unbecoming of a senior leader like Digvijaya Singh to level such charges without any basis. The Telangana Police was a highly dedicated force and its nationalistic commitment should never be questioned.

Recalling Digvijaya Singh's intemperate comments against the Indian Army earlier, Rama Rao said Telangana police was rendering a yeomen service to the nation in the fight against anti-national elements by joining hands with the forces of other States.

It was highly condemnable that Digvijaya Singh chose to target out of frustration, perhaps, at being removed from his responsibilities in Goa by the Congress high command.

However, he refused to comment on the "state of mind" of Digvijaya Singh following his humiliating removal from the party responsibilities adding "I cannot stoop to his level. After all he is a senior leader," he said.

He asked Rahul Gandhi to reign in "an intemperate Digvijaya Singh and drive sense into him" or else one would have to conclude that Digvijaya's senseless remarks against the police was at the behest of the Congress and Singh was only reflecting his party line on the issue.

If Singh sought to attack the TRS or his political rivals he was most welcome to do so but he should not make the police force or army his targets as it would lower the morale of the forces, he added.

Responding to Digvijaya Singh’s tweets, Director-General of Police Anurag Sharma also took to twitter to condemn the comments. Anurag Sharma tweeted, “Unfounded allegations from a senior responsible leader will lower the morale and image of Police engaged in fighting anti-national forces.”

Speaking to media persons over phone, the DGP said that the Telangana police personnel were doing laudable work risking their lives. Such irresponsible comments will have an adverse impact on the performance of the personnel.

Telangana IPS Officers’ Association has decided to meet on Tuesday to discuss the course of action in response to Digvijaya Singh’s comments on the state police.

BJP’s Telangana State president Dr K Laxman demanded legal action against Digvijaya Singh for his seditious remarks.

Congress senior leader Madhu Yashki Goud said that Digvijaya Singh’s comments must be his personal view but since they have come from a senior AICC leader, the government should examine it.

Another senior leader Renuka Chowdary said may be the senior AICC leader has some evidence. Meanwhile, MLA Magunta Gopinath of TRS filed a complaint in Jubilee Hills police station against Digvijaya Singh.
