Ahmedabad: For the first time in Rajya Sabha elections, the NOTA option is made available to the MLAs who are going to cast vote in the Rajya Sabha election in Gujarat to be held on August 8.

D M Patel, the Secretary of the Gujarat Assembly said that NOTA option will be printed on the ballot paper as per the directions issued by the Election Commission of India in 2013.

"Polling is taking place for Rajya Sabha elections after almost 20 years as there are four candidates in the contest for three seats. In the previous elections, polling didn't take place as the candidates were elected unopposed, he said.

He also added that for most of the MLAs, it will be a first time experience in casting their vote in Rajya Sabha elections.

Apart from BJP president Amit Shah and Union minister Smriti Irani, the ruling party has decided to field Balwantsinh Rajput against the lone Congress candidate, Ahmed Patel.
