Hyderabad: Netizens mock GST Council’s decision of slashing GST on khakra, a popular Gujarati snack, from 12% to 5%, making it to the top trending topics on Twitter.

Soon after GST council announced its decision on Friday night, hundreds of tweets and images flooded the social media screens offering crisp jokes on the government’s failure to cut down on other essential commodities and criticised the Prime Minister for ignoring the problems faced by individuals with the implemented tax reforms. “If they don't have bread let them eat Khakra,” tweeted Brumby Patrick, one netizen.

Yasar Shah, an MLA of the Samajwadi party too taunted the GST’s decision with a tweet that read “Happy khakra to you”. Another Twitter user, Ehtisham Ahmed wrote “#GujaratGaurav_NaMo... economy of the nation is about to be shunted...His ego is bigger than the Nation”.

Surprisingly, many accounts with no genuine identities trolled Narendra Modi as an evangelist of the rich and the corrupt. Another user wrote, “Modi tried divide and conquer yesterday but Khakra and Dhokla eating people will stay united and unite to throw BJP out.”

Amidst such hate statuses, a user Vijay M Kuril made a sarcastic tweet on the government’s efforts, “Whatever done by Sanjay Gandhi in 1979 it is worst than what we facing last 3 years by our PM.” There’s one optimistic tweeter, Trendulkar, who tweeted, “Now, Gujjus can carry more kilos of Khakra on their flight to New Jersey.” Freedom of speech, we tell you!
