Jodhpur: Two army helicopters made an emergency landing near a court compound in Rajasthan's Jodhpur district on Tuesday, according to news agency ANI.The helicopters were on their way to the border district of Jaisalmer in Rajasthan and had taken off from Jodhpur airport.

The helicopters made the emergency landing in a playground near the Balesar district court complex, a short distance from the Jodhpur airport.

The emergency landing was a precautionary step due to technical reasons and the army's engineers were called in to fix the helicopters.

The Army has been planning to phase out the ageing fleet of Chetak and Cheetah helicopters, which has claimed several lives over the past few years.

Under Prime Minister Narendra Modi's "Make in India" initiative, the government scrapped the planned acquisition of 197 light utility helicopters in 2014, in order to launch a new competition reserved for domestic companies and form joint ventures with foreign suppliers.
