Puducherry: Parents of candidates who were allotted MBBS seats by the centralized admission committee (Centac) in a private medical college have alleged that the college management has demanded for Rs 6 lakh more than the fees of Rs 16 lakh per annum prescribed by the Puducherry government. They said that the management of Sri Manakula Vinayagar medical college and hospital has asked them to pay additional fees before Saturday, else they would give away the seats to others who are willing to pay the extra fees.
“The Centac officials issued allotment order for my son for admission to MBBS course in SMVMC on Wednesday. We reached the college with a DD for Rs 16 lakh (fees prescribed by the government). The college staff after making us wait for almost four hours said the admission will be confirmed only if we pay extra Rs6 lakh. They were also reluctant to issue any receipt for the extra fees,” a parent said.
Refuting the charges Dhanasekaran said, “It is an attempt to tarnish the image of the college by some local elements. The parents can visit the college website to know about the fees.”
An official said Centac received complaints from parents about the extra fees demanded by a private college. “We have instructed the representatives of the private medical colleges to attend a meeting convened tomorrow (August 24) and we have planned to issue a strict warning to them not to flout the rules and regulations,” said the official.
Health minister Malladi Krishna Rao said, “We have not received complaints from anybody. People can lodge complaints with our secretary (health) (V Candavelou), who will initiate appropriate action against the erring colleges.”
