Following the recommendation of UNESCO's General Conference, the day i.e. May 3, was proclaimed by the UN General Assembly in December 1993 as the World Press Freedom Day. Since then, 3 May, is celebrated worldwide as World Press Freedom Day. The premise for this year is Media Freedom for a Better future.

The day gives us an opportunity to celebrate the fundamental principles of press freedom, to assess the state of press freedom throughout the world and to defend the media from attacks on their independence.

UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon in a briefing at UN Headquarters in connection with world press freedom day, said freedom of expression, independent media and universal access to knowledge will fortify the efforts to achieve lasting results for people and the planet. It is also a day of remembrance for those journalists who lost their lives in the exercise of their profession.
