Women lawmakers from Telangana. Telangana which has 119 Assembly and 17 Lok Sabha seats has managed to elect only 10 women. Nine were elected as legislators and one as a parliamentarian.

Telangana which has 119 Assembly and 17 Lok Sabha seats has managed to elect only 10 women. Nine were elected as legislators and one as a parliamentarian. Of the 10 elected, seven are from the TRS and three from the Congress. Out of the elected lot, there were giant killers, a first timer and former ministers. All the elected pledge to work for empowering women and developing the newly formed state.

Kalvakuntla Kavitha, a social, cultural and political activist, is the founder of Telangana Jagruthi, which is known for its cultural activities. Daughter of TRS supremo K Chandrasekhar Rao, she was active in the agitation for separate statehood.

In 2006, she adopted a few villages in Nalgonda district and has been providing free education for children with the help of local people. In 2009, she staged a protest during the Nandi awards ceremony for mocking Telangana language and its culture in a few Telugu feature films. She actively participated in the Telangana movement from 2009 to 2014. In the recent election she was elected to the Lok Sabha from Nizamabad constituency with a majority of 1,67,184 votes beating Madhu Yaskhi Goud of the Congress.

Dr Jetti Geeta Reddy, a gynecologist by profession, served as minister for Major Industries, Sugar, Commerce and Export Promotion, in Kiran Kumar Reddy's cabinet. Brought to politics by Rajiv Gandhi, she was elected from Gajwel constituency, Medak District, in 1989. She was a minister in the cabinets of Chenna Reddy and Kotla Vijayabhaskara Reddy.

She lost in 1994 and 1999 in Gajwel. She won it back in 2004 and was inducted to the cabinet of YS Rajasekhara Reddy. She later shifted to Zaheerabad constituency in 2009 general elections.

She won with a slender majority of 814 votes against TRS candidate M Manik Rao from Gajwel.

Dharmavarapu Kottam Aruna (DK Aruna) was elected as MLA from Gadwal Assembly of Mahabubnagar district for the first time in 1999 under Samajwadi Party ticket. In 2004 she joined the Congress Party and was elected from the same constituency. She also won in 2009 polls. She was a cabinet member in the late YS Rajasekhar Reddy and K Rosaiah ministries and held the portfolio of Small-Scale Industries, Sugar, Khadi and Village industries. She was shifted to Information and Public Relations (I &PR) portfolio in the ministry of Kiran Kumar Reddy. D K Aruna won over her immediate rival Bandla Krishnamohan Reddy by a majority of 8,260 votes.

Konda Surekha was elected as Mandal Parishad in 1995. In 1996 she was appointed as PCC member and in 1999 she was elected as a MLA from Shayampet. In 1999, she became the Congress Legislature Party Treasurer as well as a member of Women & Child Welfare Committee, Health and Primary Education Standing committee. She was appointed as an AICC Member in 2000. In 2004 and 2009 she contested and won from Parakal constituency.

She served as Minister for Women Development & Child Welfare, Disabled & Juvenile Welfare under YS Rajasekhara Reddy, but resigned after YSR's death. She contested in the by-polls held in June 2012 from Parkal Assembly constituency as YSR Congress Party candidate.

She resigned from the YSRC party in July 2013 citing bad treatment. She recently joined Telangana Rashtra Samithi party, contested from Warangal-East Assembly constituency and won with a majority of 55,085 votes. She is likely to get a ministerial berth in the KCR ministry.

Padma Devender Reddy, an advocate by profession was Zilla Parishad president from Ramayampet and an MLA from 2004 - 2009 from the same constituency. She lost the election in 2009. She was suspended from the TRS in 2009 and contested as a rebel. She joined TRS again in 2010. She won again as MLA from Medak Assembly constituency with a majority of 39,600 votes over her immediate rival Vijayashanti of the Congress.

Padmavati Uttam Kumar Reddy, wife of Congress leader Utaam Kumar Reddy, managed to get a ticket and contested from Kodad in the elections for the first time. She won over her nearest rival TDP’s Bollam Mallaiah Yadav with a majority of 13, 374 votes.

Bodiga Shobha, who was earlier associated with CPI (M), later joined the TRS. She was given the ticket for Choppadandi constituency and won with 86,841 votes with a margin of 54,981 over her immediate rival Suddala Devaiah of the Congress.

Laxmi is the daughter of former tribal welfare minister and prominent Adivasi leader, the late Kotnak Bheemrao. Earlier, she contested and won the elections for the Sarpanch of Asifabad Grampanchyat in 2013. Laxmi was elected Sarpanch and MPTC and MPP in the past on Telugu Desam ticket but she joined the Telangana Rashtra Samiti (TRS) in 2010 and contested for the first time for Asifabad MLA seat. Kova Laxmi won by a margin of 19,055 over her immediate rival Atram Sakku of the Congress. Incidentally, one of her opponents was her younger sister Mursakolla Saraswathi, who contested from the TDP. The sisters also had a face-off in the 2013 Sarpanch polls.

Rekha Naik is a strong leader from the Lambada community. She was a Congress leader and former Asifabad Zilla Parishad Territorial Constituency (ZPTC) member. She joined the Telangana Rashtra Samiti (TRS) a month before the notification was released for polls and got the ticket for the Khanapur reserved constituency. She won with a majority of 37,940 votes over her immediate rival, Ritesh Rathod of the TDP.

Gongidi Sunitha of TRS won the Aler constituency with 91737 votes and by a margin of 31,477 over her immediate rival Budida Bikshamaiah of the Congress. In 2006 by-polls, she contested as a rebel and lost.
