Prof. Satish DhawanSatish Dhawan, the first generation Indian aerospace engineer, widely regarded as the father of experimental fluid dynamics research in India was born on the same day in 1920 in Srinagar. He was educated both in India and in the United States. Dhawan succeeded Vikram Sarabhai, the founder of the Indian space programme, as Chairman of the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) in 1972.

Just a day before Dhawan’s birth anniversary, ISRO has successfully accomplished the MOM mission on September 24, 2014. The anxiety of every Indian has come to a conclusion with the success of the Mars Orbiter Mission, prestigiously undertaken by ISRO. Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) had prestigiously undertaken the Mars Orbiter Mission (MOM) with the sole scientific objective of exploration of Mars surface features, morphology, mineralogy and Martian atmosphere by aboriginal scientific instruments, besides many technological aspects. After completing an interplanetary journey of more than 10 months the Mars Orbiter Mission - more aptly known as Mangalyaan - entered orbit around Mars.

The founder members including Sathish Dhawan had dreamt of such a wonderful day. Of course, the tree sowed by them gave a wonderful fruit, posthumously. Though the visionary fathers like Dhawan are not present physically to enjoy the success of the mission, their visions have certainly become realities. What once said by Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam, “You have to dream before your dreams come true” has been proven factual. Yes, the visionary fathers like Dhawan have dreamt, which ultimately became a reality, over a period of time. Isn’t the great success accomplished by MOM, a splendid tribute to Dhawan on his birth anniversary?
