The article by Archana Datta "Caring for India's daughters" (The Hans India, March 13) has rightly depicted the pathetic state of girl child and also suggested good measures to improve the situation. It is so right that we are acclimatised just to observe the National Girl Child Day and International Women’s Day as mere felicitation days instead to create awareness among our ignorant masses which is under the misconception that girl child is a burden.

Though the government has announced incentive schemes yet the girl child status remains as gloomy as ever. When we look at the past glory of our women they have enjoyed greatly in Vedic times. But gradually the masculine gender has grabbed the opportunity to oppress the feminine gender. It is a pity that this oppressions still continues.

The Census 2011 revelations about child sex ratio are very alarming and it is the responsibility of all to explore available avenues to reduce the skewed up ratio. In our pluralistic society, religion, cast, customs and above all the illiteracy is making the good deeds of governments to chase its own tail.It is very interesting to know the gesture of Jayapura village in Varanasi where the birth of girl child was celebrated by planting five saplings. Such activities should be taken up across the country.

It is noticeable that government alone cannot change the situation of girl child because the social exclusion of female and her oppression has become a natural instinct. Let all the intellectuals, doctors, academicians, NGOs, celebrities, politicos, employees, self-help groups and school management committees try to go the extra mile to overcome this social malady.
