Officials plan to educate farmers on govt schemes

Nizamabad: The district agriculture officials are preparing comprehensive plan to bring awareness among farmers with regard to government schemes which are being implemented for their welfare. The government programme, titled `The first responsibility’ is aimed to educate farmers about the benefits they can avail from government for improving their agriculture practices.
The District Agriculture Officer (DAO) M Narasimha, speaking exclusively to The Hans India here on Thursday, said that a mandal would be taken as a unit to implement the programme from this Kharif season. Totally, 3,45,886 hectares are bring cultivated in the ongoing Kharif season in the district including 1,05,241 hectares of paddy, 1,24,321 hectares of soya bean, 62,132 ha maize and 13,069 ha turmeric, besides other crops.
The agriculture department officials select one-third villages in each mandal and try to improve the yield by educating the farmers in modern farm methods. Then, they can compare the yield from these villages to the yield in other villages. In the next season, the officials chose another one-third villages in the mandal and try to implement modern agriculture methods.
The process would continue till all the villages in the district are covered under the programme, Mr Narasimha said.
``The farmers would be educated on the facilities available for distribution of subsidy on seeds, subsidy on the purchase of modern farm equipment, Srisagu (novel variety of paddy cultivation), direct distribution of seeds to farmers by the government, procedures on vermicompost and other programmes,’’ the DAO said. After making studies on the output yields, the techniques would be implemented in other villages.
Mr Narasimha has said that the officials have taken up testing of soil in 500 hectares in five mandals – Gandhari, Machareddy, Jukkal, Madnur and Bodhan. Some villages in these five mandals would be chosen and soil tests would be conducted. After getting reports, farmers of the villages would be guided in a suitable manner for the cultivation agriculture fields, the officer added.
