Prime Minister Manmohan Singh’s blue-eyed boy Ashwani Kumar, who had to put in his papers as Law Minister in unceremonious circumstances, is back in reckoning. The other blue-eyed boy was former Railway Minister Pawan Bansal. Both had to resign, after uproar in parliament. During the parliament session, Aswani Kumar has got back his place under the sun.
Ashwani Kumar, who stepped down as Cabinet Minister, has been restored cabinet-rank, as Prime Minister’s Special Envoy to Japan. This made it clear that his political rehabilitation is complete. Will Pawan Bansal also find political rehabilitation? This remains to be seen, it seems.
Prime Minister Manmohan Sing nominated Ashwani Kumar “to visit for up to seven days as PM's Special Envoy for that period (in the rank and the privileges of a cabinet minister) to maintain the momentum of high-level exchanges with Japan and to prepare for the upcoming visit of Their Majesties the Emperor and Empress of Japan and the Prime Minister of Japan to India,” an official letter to Ashwani Kumar said.
