Former BJP president M Venkaiah Naidu had a dig at the Congress-led UPA Government for what he called its double-standard. The government advised austerity measures, with Finance Minister P Chidambaram imposing 10-15 per cent cut in spending. Important Ministries like HRD and Housing have curtailed expenditure. It has resulted in a saving of Rs 92,000 crore. But the entire savings seem to have been spent on the advertisements on former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi’s 69th birth anniversary.
He wanted the government to explain its double-standards and whether austerity measures are meant only for the ordinary people. It is a familiar argument of the Opposition in targeting the Nehru-Gandhi family that public funds are being misused to promote the Congress first family. A Congress leader rebutted that five generations of the Congress first family have risen to the level of Prime Minister and sought to justify that they merit it. Pandit Motilal Nehru was leader of Opposition in the Central Assembly, then an equivalent to parliament and the post to that of Prime Minister.
