Prime Minister Manmohan Singh injected a rare aggression in his speech in the Rajya Sabha recently on the falling rupee, when he decided to take on the BJP, which managed to frustrate the government reform agenda and simultaneously cried hoarse of policy paralysis. The fury of Manmohan Singh was reminiscent of a similar flash witnessed in the run up to the General Election in 2009, when he questioned the self-styled macho BJP Prime Ministerial face L K Advani and wondered what his contribution was to the nation, except the demolition of Babri Masjid and the trail of mayhem it triggered in its wake.

In the run up to General Election in 2014, the BJP is seeking to portray Manmohan Singh as the failed economist Prime Minister, which he is not willing to let go uncontested. In fact, the government is trying to get its act together and push through its reform agenda. “The easy reforms of the past have been done. We have the more difficult reforms to do, such as reduction of subsidies, insurance and pension sector reforms, eliminating bureaucratic redtape and implementing Goods and Services Tax. These are not low hanging fruit and need political consensus,” declared the Prime Minister. The Prime Minister seems to be determined to forge ahead on the reform agenda and leave behind a legacy as Prime Minister, of which even the Congress can be proud of.
