Elections to local bodies, that too Cantonment, should not have evoked much political response. But, a host of factors made the elections toSecunderabad Cantonment Board politically significant. The TRS is facing the electorate first time after it was catapulted to power in the recent general elections.

Though the Cantonment elections are technically not on party basis, the battle lines were politically drawn. The ruling party invested all its political prestige by involving ministers and legislators in a big way.

The elections were also a litmus test for the BJP-TDP combine that proved to be formidable at least in the state capital given its demographic composition. These two parties were facing the voters first time after they made significant gains in the city. More significantly, the elections to Cantonment Board came close on the heels of elections to Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC). The Cantonment elections were of special importance to Talasani

Srinivasa Yadav who defected from TDP to become minister in KCR cabinet. Thus, the outcome of these elections would also impact on the decision of many more fence-sitters.
The TRS as expected won the majority of seats and would capture the Vice-Chairman post in the Cantonment Board.
This victory silences its critics who were arguing that the TRS had no base in the capital. It is true. The TRS did not even dare contest in the last GHMC polls. But, post-bifurcation politics helped the party register a remarkable progress sending shock waves to the BJP-TDP combine who are aspiring to win the civic polls in the common capital.
The defection of influential leaders from TDP seems to be working on the ground too. The Cantonment mandate may further fuel defections as it comes as shot in the arm for the ruling party that authors ‘Operation Akarsh.’ The BJP-TDP alliance substantially lost ground after the last General Elections, which is evident from the gravity of their defeat. This may even raise hackles in the alliance which is already crippled with internal differences. The anti-TDP voices in BJP may be heard much louder.
The Congress plan for revival suffered a heavy jolt as the family members of its leaders also lost miserably. Normally, the Cantonment elections are essentially personality-driven. But, the underlying political current cannot be ignored. The populist promises and schemes of KCR government and the grand plans orchestrated by the CM himself for Hyderabad should have gone down well with the voters.
Now, this result would motivate the TRS to move heaven and earth to capture the GHMC.But, there can be a many a slip between the cup and the lip, if TRS does not execute its strategy with all the consummate skill.
