Eluru: The Cyberabad police on Friday swooped on the residence of Telugu Desam Party (TDP) vice-president and former minister Maganti Babu to arrest his elder son Ramchandran alias Ramji in connection with a sexual harassment case. Tension prevailed in Eluru as TDP local leaders obstructed the police team from discharging its duties.A
On April 15, the police received a complaint from a woman, Soni, who charged Maganti's son with sending porn pictures and foul comments on cell phone. She alleged sexual harassment by Ramji. Incidentally, the married woman is a close relative of the accused. The police registered a case of cyber crime.
As part of investigation, the police in plain clothes came here from Hyderabad in two vehicles. They conducted searches in Maganti's house for more than five hours. They grilled family members of Maganti to know whereabouts of Ramji. They insisted on arresting the accused in order to justify the investigation. However, they could not succeed in their attempt as Ramji was away from home.
As soon as the new of the police rounding off the residence of Maganti spread like wildfire, a large number of TDP leaders and supporters arrived. They entered into a heated argument with the police with the demand to go back. They said they would never allow them to initiate action against Ramji without valid evidence to support the allegations made against him.
Responding to the request of the police, Maganti told them over phone that he would cooperate with the probing police team. He assured them that after his arrival in Eluru he would ensure his son's summoning before the police team. Reacting to media's queries, Ravindra Reddy, who was heading the police team, categorically said that there was no question of his team returning to Hyderabad without the arrest of Ramji. They would wait until Maganti arrives in Eluru and hands over his son to the police.
Sources in the police department said that the arrest of Ramji was imminent considering the seriousness of the charges made against him.
