Nation comes to a standstill as he walks into sunset
The Sachin Tendulkar saga ended on Saturday with the entire nation coming to a standstill. The moment he addressed the audience on the conclusion of the second Test against West Indies at Wankhede Stadium, it appeared like time had been frozen for posterity. The celebrations turned serene to the point of being poignant with the crowds chanting his name over and over. Hushed silence greeted the man when he began his address, which itself was emotion-ridden.
It was a new Tendulkar that the world was seeing. Caught, perhaps by the fact that he would never turn up at any ground as a player, he expressed in as many words about the joy he derived while playing for the country, saluted his coaches from childhood and singled out his wife, Anjali for being there with him and the family while he was occupied with the sport. She was his biggest source of strength was uttered repeatedly.
The spectators, with a tear in the eye and a lump in the throat, tried to get to terms with the fact that they were seeing the legend for the last time as an active player. It was an occasion when emotions could not be controlled by any human being. The crowd did not but the great man did precisely that till the surcharged overtook him. However, for most part, he controlled it superbly and regaled the crowd with his gentlemanly thanksgiving speech.
The 40-year-old batting icon struggled to keep his emotions in check as he delivered his farewell speech in front of cheering fans before going back to the pitch to touch it in reverence for one last time.
"My life between 22 yards for 24 years, it is hard to believe that the wonderful journey is coming to end. I would take this opportunity to thank all those people who have played an important role in my life," an overwhelmed Tendulkar said at the presentation ceremony. On the day when Sachin made his last appearance on the cricket field, his wife Anjali spoke on TV, bringing Tendulkar the family man to the fore. Yet, she wondered how he would settle down in life because he would not be doing the one thing that he had done all through his adult life-playing cricket and winning great battles.
The thought appears strange but then that is a fact of life.
