Johannesburg: A gallant effort by Vernon Philander and Faf du Plesis and a gutsy innings by skipper Graeme Smith (68) helped South Africa claw its way back into the reckoning on a day of dramatic developments to go to stumps at 213-6 in 66 overs on the second day of the first Test against India at the Wanderers Stadium here on Thursday.

After dismissing India for 280 runs, the host flirted with disaster from the beginning to be precariously placed at 146 for six wickets.

Philander, wielding the willow with gusto after a splendid bowling effort, put on a fifty-run stand for the seventh wicket with Plesis to also take the Proteas past the 200-run mark.

Indians struck with vengeance that resulted in a top-order collapse after the pace trio of Ishant Sharma, Mohammed Shami and Zaheer Khan worked in tandem to engineer the collapse after South Africa was coasting ahead comfortably at 130 for the loss of one wicket.
