London : Real Madrid striker Gareth Bale has become all-time leading British goal scorer as he smashed his 43rd La Liga goal to help his side trounce injury-hit Sevilla 4-0 at Santiago Bernabeu.

Bale has surpassed Gary Lineker's record of 42 goals in 103 games for Barcelona.

The match also saw star striker Cristiano Ronaldo missing a penalty before eventually scoring a goal after the half-time.

Real remained in a commanding possession throughout the match, with forward Karim Benzema getting the first goal for his side in the sixth minute to put them in lead.

Ronaldo (64th minute) and midfielder Gareth Bale (66th minute) then smashed a goal each within the span of two minutes to make it 3-0 against the visitors.

Just four minutes before the full time, Rodriguez Jese gave his side a perfect finish by netting the fourth goal for his side with his fellow substitute James Rodriguez, the Guardian reported.

With this win, Madrid have reduced the gap with their neighbours Atletico Madrid in second place to one point while Sevilla have slipped to sixth spot.

They will next face La Liga leaders Barcelona at Camp Nou on April 2.
