Pune: Hyderabad’s eight-year-old Showrya Samala, a fourth standard student at St Peter's Model School, Nacharam, is catching the attention of everyone here with his exploits in the ongoing Pune Open National tennis tournament. A trainee at Suresh Krishna Tennis Academy, Showrya has entered the finals of the Under-8 boys singles category here on Wednesday. An equally noteworthy achievement is that he is in the singles quarterfinals in the Under-10 competition.

His route to the title clash has been impressive. He defeated each of his opponents in the earlier rounds round with an identical 5-0 verdict, including Dev Turakua from Maharashtra (round 1); local lad Vijay Shinde (round 2), Tej Aak from Gujarat in the third round; Dev Guvlevala from Maharashtra in the quarterfinals while he faced some sort of opposition in the semifinals where he defeated Maharashtra boy Arush Thakadia 6-3. Continuing the fine run in the Under-10 category, Showrya beat Maharashtra players Kene Ojas and Niture Arush 5-2 in successive rounds to book a place in the last eight.
