Hyderabad: For a passionate skater in his initial days, Gattu Anil Kumar has today no regrets, whatsoever, about having made a career shift and taking to roll ball that is still in its nascent stages in the country.

Showing a natural dexterity for the exciting sport, the 14-year-old Karimnagar native has achieved a rare distinction while becoming the only player from the two Telugu-speaking States to have made it to the national team.

Originally, belonging to a small tribal village, Adavi Somanpally, Manthani, the young hopeful says he is indebted to his father Gattu Damodar, a former MPTC, for being a pillar of constant support and encouragement since the time he decided to try his hand at the new sport.

Having made a mark while representing Telangana State in various national events, Anil Kumar is the toast of the two States as he will don the India colours during the fourth Roll Ball World Cup-2017 to be held at Dhaka from February 17 to 23.

RBAT President Bonthu Ram Mohan, the present Mayor of Hyderabad, hailed the talent of Anil Kumar, which, he averred, would take him, and the Association, places.

Rahul Saridena said that they had drawn up a viable blueprint to develop the sport in all districts of the State. He said it was a matter of prestige that the boys were proving their worth across all formats. He said that teams from three universities in the State are to participate in the AIU Nationals, which will be hosted by Punjab University, from March 5 to 8.

Incidentally, Anil Kumar is the second international from Telangana State after Ahsaan Ahmed, who played in the recent Asian Roll Ball Championship at Bangkok.
