London: England began their quest for the Champions Trophy 2017 with a record-setting eight0wicket win over a gallant Bangladesh in the Cup opener on Thursday.Joe Root was the one who anchored the innings with a rollicking unbeaten 133 while the host chased a mammoth 306 runs target after the Lions were at their flamboyant best by putting on board an impressive 305 for six wickets after being put into bat.

They owed it all to Tamim Iqbal, who scored a magnificent 128 off 142 balls, Wicket-keeper Mushfiqur Rahim smashed a 72-ball 79. Liam Plunkett was the pick of English bowlers with his 4/59 haul.

England lost all-rounder Chris Woakes to a side injury after he had bowled two overs and they looked lethargic in the field at the start of their bid to win a global 50-over tournament for the first time.Root, whose tenth ODI century it was, was involved in two massive partnerships Alex Hales (95) and Morgan (75no) that took them nearer to the win.
