Hyderabad: The second edition of Telangana Gold Cup will be bigger and more exciting than the inaugural event that was held two years earlier. The biennial tournament, which is the State’s premier championship in the genre, is the perfect platform for all those youngsters, whose talent was never brought to the limelight because of the partisan attitude of the administrators running Hyderabad Cricket Association (HCA).
Listing the achievements of The Telangana Cricket Association (TCA) since its inception, its Vice-Chairman and Chevella Lok Sabha member Konda Vishweshwar Reddy, its Secretary and President Dharam Guruva Reddy and Yendala Laxmi Narayana told reporters here on Tuesday that they were filling the void that was created by HCA.
The 32-team eight-group T-20 championship will begin on October 27. League matches will be held in all districts while the knockout stage will be in Hyderabad. They said that they had been wining laurels from cricketers and coaches from all over the State as, unlike HCA, they were honouring promises with regard to providing infrastructural support despite economic hardships and hiring proven coaches and mentors, who formed the backbone of the Association and played a big role in treamlining their efforts.
Guruva Reddy stated that their avowed mission was to scout for talent, nurture them and create quality teams in every age-group and senior category. They intended to field teams that can take on any HCA XI and thrash them at their own game in any venue of their choice.
He came down heavily against HCA office-bearers, who were hoodwinking people by claims that they had promoted the sport in the interiors. He cited the recent example of a Combined Districts XI that HCA had floated just ahead of Moin-ud-Dowla Gold Cup. The district outfit was humiliated in every match because the players were ‘accommodated’ to please certain vested interests while merit was tossed out.
They said that contrary to projections, TCA was a healthy body that endeavoured to stay as genuine promoters of the gentleman’s game and reach out to every player in the districts. Once they get an affiliation from the Board of Control for Cricket in India they would aspire to produce players who would knock on the Test doors at regular intervals and not like HCA, which has been going backward in terms of producing qualitative output.
