Currently seen in Star Plus 'Diya Aur Baati Hum', actor Deepika Singh, who took everyone by surprise with her simple yet sweet portrayal of 'Sandhya', goes down the memory lane and shares her small screen journey Askari Jaffer How did acting happen? sandhyaI had friends who were into modelling and I accompanied them to audition. That was the biggest plus point. Being the eldest daughter, I had lot of responsibilities towards my family. I enrolled myself for MBA through correspondence and also joined theatre. There I realised I love acting. I devoted two hours every day to theatre. After giving successful auditions for 'Diya Aur Baati Hum' in Delhi, I was called to Mumbai for the final round. However, my parents were apprehensive of me going to Mumbai, but I managed to convince them. While I was told that the final selections will prevail for two days, it lasted for one week. To my luck I got selected!
How much of you is Sandhya?
Totally! I relate to her 100 per cent. Like her, I'm stubborn and once I make a decision, I stand by it regardless of the consequences. I am strong and emotional at the same time. Even I had to fight it out with my family to pursue them to let me take up acting - just the way she had to become an IPS officer. I struggled a lot to come at this place and I feel that every Indian woman has a 'Sandhya' in her because we all struggle in our life. The only difference is that the character 'Sandhya' is fictional work of the writer whereas I'm created by the God.
How is 'Sandhya' off-screen?
I am a fun-loving person. I shop a lot and enjoy playing video games whenever I get the time. I am an extrovert and full of life. I take life as it come- unlike 'Sandhya'. Any memorable moments from you're shooting for the soap? When I won the Best 'Bahu' Award at the Star 'Parivaar' Awards. Do you think that in real life people can stay together as Sandhya and Suraj. Yes, I met many people like them in real life while promoting our show. I met a family where the wife did her B.Ed but her husband was illiterate. So I think we can live together in real life too.
What is your style statement?
I wear what I am comfortable in. Attires should suit your body and age and I believe that we are the people who create the trend. I am choosy about clothes and I never go for anything randomly. What is your dream role? What I'm doing currently is my dream role. What are your future projects? Right now, I'm occupied with 'Diya Aur Baati Hum'. I don't have anything else in my plate. Marriage I don't have the time to date anyone. I believe that marriages are made in heaven and if find someone appropriate I will not hesitate to tell him before going ahead with the marriage. But for all these things to take shape I have to wait for more two to three years.
