Mandira Bedi has the 90s daily soap Shanti, the evergreen ‘Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jayenge’ and the never ending ‘Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi’ to her credit. Recently she showed her talent in ‘24,’ the TV show produced by actor Anil Kapoor for ‘Colors TV,’ but she wanted to do something bigger and better and get talked about. The creative artiste in her surfaced and she donned the role of a fashion designer with the launch her new, flagship store in Mumbai. Today, she is the talk of the fashion world! Recently she was in Hyderabad and talked about her collection and more.
What inspired her to take up fashion? “While anchoring for cricket and hosting for ‘Indian Idol’, I used to wear sarees and I think a saree is the most beautiful garment for a woman. Forever evergreen. I have started wearing sarees over the years for my shows. I think I connect with saris and I understand a good saree. That's how I decided to get into this love affair with the saree to the next level,” she says.
She believes that her collection is different from others. “There are many creative and talented designers out there, but what I would like to believe sets my products apart is the fact that every piece I design is an extension of myself and my fashion sensibilities. My sarees are an amalgamation of colours, details and interesting fabrics that can be worn by literally anyone,” says Mandira.
So who would she love to dress up with her designs? “Legendary Rekha. Nobody looks better in a saree than she does,” shares Mandira.
The restless person that she is, will she consider films over television if a good offer comes by? “Never. Television has given me whatever I have right now. All those actors who leave television and take to Bollywood at the first opportunity are committing a big mistake. Unlike films, there is consistency in television.”
About the oft-heard comment that she wears brazen clothes, she clarifies, “There are so many women in the film and even telly world who wear stuff which send shock waves of higher intensity,” says Madira.
Her style funda is different, she say, “One should not follow the trend but they should wear according to the body type. Even I do that according to my shape I plan my dress.
