What exactly is honey? It is a natural product, made by bees, when they convert nectar into simple sugars. It contains valuable vitamins and minerals, like iron, calcium, potassium, sodium, amino acids and enzymes, as well as Vitamins B and C. It is a powerful antioxidant too. This increases its importance in skin and hair care, in terms of preventing the loss of moisture. All these properties of honey make it an ideal natural cosmetic ingredient.

As far as the hair is concerned, honey can help to relieve dryness and make the hair soft and smooth. It can certainly help to improve the rough texture of dry and damaged hair. As it contains valuable vitamins, minerals and enzymes, honey also nourishes the hair when externally applied, adding luster and health to the hair.

However, there is a common misconception that honey, when applied on the hair, will lead to hair graying. This is not true. There is no evidence at all that honey whitens the hair or leads to graying. Honey is not a bleach that is will make the hair white. Also, honey is not known as a cause of premature greying. In fact, the causes of premature graying are not really known as yet and are thought to lie in the immune system or hereditary factors.

Here are some home remedies with honey for the hair

  • Mix honey with egg and apply on the hair. Leave it on 20 minutes. It helps to soften the hair and adds body.
  • Or, add lemon juice to honey and apply on the hair. Leave it on for 20 minutes and then wash the hair. It softens and cleanses the hair. Helps to restore the normal acid-alkaline balance.
  • One tablespoon honey can be added to a litre of water and used as a last rinse, after washing the hair. It helps to counteract dryness and adds shine to the hair.
  • For a deep conditioning treatment, mix together one egg, one tablespoon pure almond oil, the juice of a lemon and one teaspoon honey. These ingredients should be well mixed. You can use an egg beater if you like. Massage this into the hair.
