The cast of the ‘Maze Runner: The Death Cure’ Dylan O’Brien and Kaya Scodelario talk about the epic finale of ‘The Maze Runner’ trilogy. The trilogy directed by Wes Ball is based on the books penned by American writer James Dashner. The third installment was made on a budget of $62m and generated more than $288m at the box office.

Excerpts from an interview:

‘Maze Runner’ has always felt like it has a larger political message with the segregation; a literal wall and so on. There are a lot of deeper meanings in the film. What do you guys think of it?
Dylan O’Brien: You can definitely take things from the films though it’s not the agenda or the priority of the film in any way it is cool for films like these, the adventure stories that I would have loved as a kid to have these elements that are relevant and to reflect that in the world. It gets kids to start thinking however they want to think about those kinds of things.

Kaya Scodelario: It’s definitely interesting for me because I am on the other side of that wall and it is something I feel very strongly about – politics. It’s something I have been very involved in, in the past couple of years. So, it was interesting for me to have that chat because he did make those connections though as Dylan said, is not the focus but you can take that from it, and it was interesting for me to explore being on the other side of that.

It’s the end of an era. How does it feel?
Dylan: We’ve been talking constantly about how it is bittersweet. We’ve loved this time together and we’re just so happy that we got to do this and it (the movie) is something we all love so genuinely, and we love each there so it’s really cool. Kaya: It’s a little strange. We’re so used to seeing each other every six months or so and now it’s like this could be the last time.

How does it feel to see this franchise become so popular; a large part due to the acting and the movie?
Dylan: It’s really cool. It still feels like our own little thing too that even still to this day hasn’t quite set in that our movie has resonated with a good amount of people and we have a great fan base that are excited about our third film. It’s kind of amazing because we all met in the first one and it wasn’t a huge project and it wasn’t a long big shoot with a ton of money poured into it. It was a little bit of a chance. It’s cool and I just feel so proud of that our little adventure took off like that.

Kaya: The credit goes out to the fans that they really stuck with us a long time to be into something, especially at that age where you are changing so much and so are your opinions, tastes are changing. I think it’s really wonderful that they have really stuck by us this whole time. That’s really special to me that we’ve created something that people have had something of life experience with.

What was it like working with Wes Ball throughout all three films?
Dylan: Wes is amazing even though it was his first three films which is unbelievable. He is an amazing talent, he is a remarkable person and he really is an incredible filmmaker and he is going to be around for a long time. So, it’s amazing to have the same filmmaker and leader handle three films. He is our friend too so it’s just great.

Have all of you read all the trilogies?
Kayla: I haven’t. I read the first one in Louisiana and Wes was really clear about the fact that we were going to take these movies in our own journey and make it creative in a different sense, so I didn’t think it was important to really have to know it really thoroughly. I think it’s cool that it is slightly different forms and that’s my way of explaining that I didn’t read.

There are so many videos of the cast laughing and cracking up. Who is the funniest member of the cast?
Kayla: Everyone is funny. It’s so many different personalities but it just works. All the boys are hilarious and when everyone is together, everyone has their little thing. Thomas is so deadpan that it is the funniest thing ever. He doesn’t even realise he is doing it. It’s just how he is.
