WhatsApp crosses 700m active users

Back in August last year, WhatsApp announced that it had crossed 600 million monthly active users. Co-founder Jan Koum has now revealed that the messaging app has now crossed 700 million monthly active users, or in other words adding 100 million users in just four months.

As far as India is concerned however, Koum hasn’t offered the latest numbers. In November last year, the company had announced that it had 70 million monthly active users in India, up from 50 million users in May. In addition to revealing the user base, Koum also said that its 700 million user base was sending more than 30 billion messages every day.

Last year, Facebook acquired WhatsApp for $22 billion, after an initial bid of $19 billion. The messaging app being an ad-free service lost about $230 million in the first half of last year on revenue of about $15 million. Neither of the companies however have any plans of monetizing the service. Mark Zuckerberg recently confirmed as much, when he said that they have no near-term plan to make money from WhatsApp.

Going forward, WhatsApp plans on introducing a voice calling feature after having disrupted SMS. Alleged leaked photos of the service have surfaced online hinting at an imminent launch. Recent leaks also hint at “Call via Skype” feature, as well as a driving mode. Additionally, the company is also believed to be working on a web client version for its app. - bgr.in
