Mahabubnagar: A swine flu ‘negative pressure isolation centre’, claimed to be the first of its kind in the country, has been established in the district hospital here. The unit has been imported by Hyderabad-based Sri Instruments Pvt Ltd and in coordination with Bethal, an organisation in Israel. The firm is importing insurance risk management and intensive care units.

The centre, inaugurated by Health Minister Dr Lakshma Reddy, has several unique features, including early treatment facilities. As against a week to be taken for the treatment of the flu, it facilitates virtually immediate cure when the machine kills the virus sucking it through ultra-violet rays.

Also, wind pressure is used to check the causes of the virus. Since the patient is isolated from the outside environment it facilitates early cure ---within 24 hours. The centre is a boon to the people, particularly the poor, doctors here say.

Since the inauguration, patients are availing themselves of the treatment facilities at the centre. Initially, it was intended only to be a demonstration unit; but considering the serious situation prevailing in several districts in the State, particularly the State capital, and the needs of swine flu patients, it is to be retained permanently in the hospital, according to the thinking of the State government. The TS government plans to import more such units, each of which costs Rs 33 lakh, including the levies, to be established in all government hospitals.

According to Dr. Samuel, superintendent of the hospital, if the import levies are waived the cost could be cut down, paving the way for more units to be brought into the country.

Doctors say such centres are not available even in corporate hospitals. These centres are said to be more effective in providing cure than ICUs in private hospitals. Sri Instruments Pvt Ltd has made the centre available at the hospital free of cost.
