If things go as planned, then this year’s Kumbh Mela in Nashik, where millions are expected to congregate, may turn out to be much saner event than usual. A group of techies from Maharashtra are taking much pain to find out solutions to probable challenges, including thousands getting lost in the crowd during the Kumbh Mela.

A group of 15 techies led by Sunil Khandbahale, a Nashik-based innovator, joined hands with the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) about a year ago and started KumbhaThon primarily created to address Kumbh-specific problems. Now, with the help of thousands of volunteers and experts from across the world and some help from corporate and state administration, they are developing a host of mobile based applications to address the challenges of the mass gathering.

An estimate says around 30 million people will visit Nashik in August this year for the Kumbh Mela. And to ensure the safety of these visitors, Khandbahale and his team have developed the mobile and web server-based app called ‘Milaap’ to serve as a lost and found platform. “This way the concerned person’s whereabouts can be shared immediately. The traditional, Government-run booths function with volunteers noting down details from complainants and then comparing them with details of each missing person. With the app, each booth had real time data on missing persons and will save precious time,” Khandbahale said.

Khandbahale and his team are also focusing on crowd management, epidemic outbreak prevention and mapping Nashik. “The last time Kumbh was held here was in 2003. "The technology in the last 12 years has advanced drastically and we are trying to make use of such advancement to help our city,” Khandbahale said. (Courtesy: Daily Mail)
