Google\'s Android: 8 little-known facts

Google's Android is the world's most widely used mobile operating system. The OS powers not only majority of smartphones worldwide but also most wearables in the world.

Here are some little-known facts about Alphabet-owned Google's Android operating software.

The number of Android-powered smartphones powered in fourth quarter of 2015, according to research group Gartner, are 325,394.4. That accounts for almost 81% of the market, dwarfing the 71,525.9 for Apple's iOS.

According to Gartner, 1.37 billion or 84% of the smartphones to be shipped worldwide in 2017 will run on Android operating system.

Android operating system has generated revenue of $31 billion and $22 billion in profit for Google since 2008. This was revealed by Oracle Corp's lawyer in court in a case the company is fighting against Google.

Google makes money from Android in two ways: One, through advertisements given by Google shown on Android phones. Two, from revenue Google makes from Google Play, its mobile app store.

In 2005, Google quietly purchases Android Inc, a start-up company co-founded two years earlier by former Apple engineer Andy Rubin to write software for mobile phones. "We are thrilled to have them here," a Google spokesman told BusinessWeek Online at the time.

In the year 2008, the first Android mobile operating system, version 1.0, hit the market. Even this first commercial issue had many of the Google features now familiar to billions of users: A market place to buy apps, contacts, calendar, maps and search.

In the year 2009, the first version of the operating software to carry the name of an enticing desert -- Cupcake -- was launched. It was to be followed by Donut, Eclair, Froyo, Gingerbread, Honeycomb, Ice Cream Sandwich, Jelly Bean, KitKat, Lollipop and, the latest offering, Marshmallow.

Most Android smartphones in the world are made in China. According to the website expandedramblings.com, Chinese smartphones make for as much as 78% of the Android market.
