Abhijit Bose, the co-founder and CEO of Ezetap, has been appointed as the head of WhatsApp India. He will be joining WhatsApp early next year i.e. 2019. Bose will be based out of Gurugram, once he joins as head of WhatsApp India. He and his team will focus on helping large and small businesses to connect with their customers. In this new position, Bose will also have the consent to build an India-based team, the company’s first full country team outside the US.

Abhijit Bose is an MBA graduate from Harvard Business School; he brings in 20 of years experience in the technology industry. He also studied mechanical engineering in Cornell University. He has worked with companies like Oracle, Intuit, ngpay and Siebel. Ezetap is a Bengaluru-based payment solutions company which was started in 2011. The platform has grown notably. Every month it processes over Rs 1,100 crore transactions and has over 2 lakh deployments across the nation.

WhatsApp has appointed an India head for the first time. The messaging platform was facing heat from the Indian government from a long time on the issue of spreading of fake news by means of this platform. Its payments business is another major challenge for WhatsApp in India. The appointment of Abhijit Bose who has an expertise in building an end-to-end payments platform ground up indicates that WhatsApp is planning a major push into payments space.

There are over 1 million subscribers of WhatsApp business products in India. WhatsApp has released the WhatsApp Business app for small business owners and the WhatsApp Business API (application programming interface) to serve larger businesses earlier this year in the country.
