Last week rumours surfaced that Amazon was giving second thoughts about its New York headquarters, most people took it as an agreement move.

For more concessions, locals were pushing Amazon, and if the company looked ready to walk away, it might take away the pressure. With so much money and time invested, it appeared illogical to simply call it off.

The local politicians had been pushing Amazon on taxes and unionization for months. Activists booed executives out of city council meetings while protests circled the proposed construction site.

No one expected they could stop the project entirely, with the mayor and governor bought in, but maybe if they made much noise, they could unionize the janitors in the new buildings or shame Amazon into a few extra education programs.

Now the picture looks very different as Amazon is leaving. As we thought Amazon wasn’t as committed to New York and those local protests had a greater effect than anyone realized.

After years of loudly searching for a second headquarters, the biggest surprise was that Amazon may have been more interested in favours from the local government than the building.

As planned the Northern Virginia and Nashville projects are in progress but did anyone’s presume where the 25,000 workers expected for the New York site will end up. Maybe it wasn’t as necessary as it appeared?
