The Junior Doctors Association said this was not the first such incident. They said in the past when such incidents took place and the junior doctors went on strike, the government made hollow promises on providing Special Protection Force (SPF) in the hospital premises.

They said when the incident took place there were only two guards who were old and not fit to handle the kind of mob that had attacked the doctor on duty.

The junior doctors alleged that about 40 members were involved in the attack and majority of them were in inebriated condition.

"The female doctors are now scared to work during the night hours. These kinds of attacks would further discourage them," said Dr Kranthi Chaitanya, president Junior Doctors Association (Gandhi Medical College Wing).

He said expressing solidarity with the Junior Doctors, the Telangana Government Doctors Association (TGDA) has sent strike notice to Superintendent of Gandhi Hospital. They demanded the intervention of Minister of Health T Rajaiah in the issue.

They said that the government should strictly impose the provision for taking stringent action, like three years of imprisonment and Rs 50,000 penalty for offenders.

If these rules were implemented even once in the past, such inci- dents would not have recurred, the junior doctors added.

The Out-patient services in the hospital were stopped and junior doctors attended only to emergency services from the morning.

The senior doctors have also supported the strike. Junior doctors said they will join duties only, if a firm assurance of security was given by the government.
