Hyderabad: The Hyderabad police have banned public drinking for a week and the necessary orders have been passed with immediate effect on Friday. The police commissioner M. Mahendar Reddy issued orders under Section 144 to this effect on Friday. These orders will be in force from July 5 to July 11, inclusive of both days. It may be extended further and the violators of these orders will be booked.

The police have decided to pass these orders as many cases of drunkards creating nuisance in several areas of the city, troubling women and children have been reported.

The police officials said that they received many reports indicating that consumption of liquor in public places had become unchecked in several areas in twin cities, resulting in problems for the public, especially women and children.

The police commissioner Mahendar Reddy said that though consumption of liquor in public places has been already illegal, it was considered necessary to take effective measures to prevent dangers to human life and the safety and security of women and children and for preventing disturbances.
