Medak: About 50 bonded labourers of Nanded in Maharasthra working as stone cutters for a contractor on the outskirts of Nadulapur in Andole mandal were liberated on Thursday following the intervention of State Home Minister Naini Narasimha Reddy. They had been working for a contractor, Ravinder Reddy, from Nizamabad district. Chandu of Maharashtra was sub-contractor.

The minister intervened following complaints of harassment of the labourers by the contractor, particularly during the last three days. The contractor allegedly detained them without providing food.

The issue came to light when a labourer managed to free himself and gave information to an advocate of Hyderabad, Nago Rao. Rao complained to the minister, who rushed to the village along with the Labour department officials.

The labourers also reached Nadulapur and poured out their woes to Naini, who ensured that they were shifted to their previous location in Kondapur village.

The minister later told the media that children of the labourers were being admitted in local schools. He said action would be initiated against the contractor for violating labour laws. Houses would be built for the labourers. Steps would be initiated to recover dues from the contractor.
