Warangal: Urgent measures to augment the power production in Telangana were afoot as Telangana State needs about 6000 MW power for its requirements, said Telangana Genco Chairman and Managing Director D Prabhakar Rao.

He said plans have been formulated for production of additional power to meet future needs. At present, the state government is getting ready to import 2000 MW power from the neighboring Chhattisgarh state. Prabhakar Rao inaugurated a 100 KW solar captive power plant at the Kakatiya Institute of Technology and Science (KITS) in Warangal on Thursday.

Speaking to the media persons, he said that Chief Minister K Chandrasekhar Rao was against importing power from other States. The Genco CMD said that the power production will soon start at the third stage of Kakatiya Thermal Power Project at Bhupalapalli in Warangal.

Prabhakar Rao appreciated the initiative of KITS management in setting up the solar power plant, which he said was first of its kind in Warangal district. He advised other engineering colleges to emulate KITS and establish solar power plants in their premises to produce power to meet their requirements.

Telangana State NPDCL Chairman and Managing Director K Venkata Narayana said that the government was planning to ensure uninterrupted power supply to people as part of its plan to turn the State into ‘Bangaru Telangana.’ He pointed out that 100 KW power meant the power utilized by 1000 consumers.

KITS Secretary V Lakshmikantha Rao informed that the solar power plant was set up at a cost of Rs 87 lakh as part of the institute’s ‘Go Green’ mission. The college is yet to receive 30 percent subsidy being provided by the government for solar power plants. Four hundred roof top solar panels were used to build the power plant on the college building. MLA V Satish Kumar, Principal K Ashoka Reddy, V VishwanadhaRao and P Narayana Reddy, Project Officer Prof L Sudheer Reddy, Plant in-charge G Rajender, College Public Relations Officer D Prabhakara Chary, academic council members, faculty, staff and students were present.
