Rich tributes to ECIL founder MD Dr As Rao
Addressing a gathering at ECIL which is celebrating the birth centenary its founder Dr A S Rao, Chidambaram recalled the various facets of Rao as a scientist and a humanist to the core.

Hyderabad: The new and emerging avenues of instrumentation in nano-electronics, electronic warfare and cyber security made the role of ECIL more relevant than ever before, Principal Scientific Advisor to Government of India, Dr R Chidmabaram said on Saturday.
Addressing a gathering at ECIL which is celebrating the birth centenary its founder Dr A S Rao, Chidambaram recalled the various facets of Rao as a scientist and a humanist to the core. Chidambaram said the concept of automated ballot emerged during Rao's time. Several former CMDs of ECIL shared their association with Dr Rao and their experiences in keeping the ECIL flag flying high even at the most gruelling times. They said Rao was a firm believer in self-reliance and hated import of foreign technology and foreign devices.
Former CMD S R Vijaykar, who had authored a biography of Dr Rao, said he was instrumental in conceiving ECIL and bringing it to Hyderabad despite heavy odds. Rao faced opposition from Shiv Sena and had allegedly received threats from Maharashtra leaders.
ECIL Employees and Workers' Union president Yadagiri Rao expressed fear that the NDA government's decision to allow 100 percent FDI in Defence sector may kill strategic public sector units like ECIL.
Former CMD G P Srivatsava said the turnaround of ECIL was made possible by the hard work of ECIL employees. He recalled the remark of Dr Rao then, who had told Srivatsava, “Ordinary employees of ECIL can do extraordinary things.”
One of Dr Rao's sons, Dr A Ramachandra Rao, a US citizen, fondly recalled his father's views and turned emotional while concluding his address at the centenary function. He said that Dr Rao opposed when the AS Rao Nagar was named after him.
