Hyderabad: Finally, Telangana state government plunged into action to overcome the power crisis that put the State's image at stake after the bifurcation. The government drew ambitious plans to achieve the status of ‘surplus power State’ in the next four years.

To begin with, the government initiated action for the procurement of power from the thermal power plants located in Southern region. The TSTRANSCO officials said that the Telangana State Southern Power Distribution Company Limited (TSSPDCL) invited EOI (Expression of Interest) from the companies under DBFOO (Design, Build, Finance, Own and Operate).

The officials said that under the agreement, the government would procure 2,000 MW of power immediately. Many generation units already came forward and submitted EOIs as the last date was on September 30. The Transco was planning to complete the process for procurement by the end of November so that the State would meet the requirement of power in the next Kharif season and also the growing industrial and domestic needs. Under the long term plan, the TSGENCO proposed to set up seven thermal projects with the total installed capacity of 5,500 MW required to achieve the surplus power status by 2018. The company already submitted proposals to the government with an estimation of Rs 36,000 crore to set up the projects. Genco had proposed to invest Rs 10,000 crore and the remaining money would be borrowed from the banks for the speedy completion of the projects.

The Genco officials told The Hans India that the major challenge before the government was to mobilise the resources and land for the establishment of the new thermal power projects. The possibility of the utilisation of more coal from the Singareni Collieries would also be sorted out before approaching the Coal India for the allocation of coal from other coal fields for the new projects.

The present total installed capacity of thermal power generation in Telangana is 2,700 MW. The government wants to increase the capacity to 8,000 MW required to meet the total power demand in future.
