Girija who fell in the borewellHyderabad: A four-year-old girl fell into an open agricultural borewell around 11 am on Sunday in Manchala village in Ibrahimpatnam mandal in Ranga Reddy district. When last reports came in, rescue efforts were still continuing.

The girl, Girija, was playing and accidentally fell into the open borewell while her grandparents were working in the field, Manchal police station inspector P Jagadeeshwar said. Rescue teams sent an oxygen pipe down the 40-ft bore well to keep the girl alive. Since the incident took place in a village it took almost an hour to get the 108 Ambulance which brought the oxygen supply.

District Collector Shashidhar and MLA Manchireddy Kishan Reddy are supervising rescue operations at the village. NDRF teams which have reached the venue are providing the lighting system. The borewell was dug up around six months ago, but was left abandoned as it did not yield any water, DCP (L B Nagar) P Visvaprasad said.

The rescue operation would continue at night as well, he said, adding, "So far, around 25-feet land has been dug up around the open borewell.

It may take another 10 hours to reach the borewell depth." "Five soil excavating machines were pressed into service to dig soil. A camera was also put in the hole, but the victim has not been seen yet. We are using LED lights in view of the darkness inside," another official said.

The team engaged in rescue operations said they were trying to gain access by digging a pit next to the bore well. Late in the evening, the team could notice the clothes of the girl inside the well. Minister Mahender Reddy also visited the spot and directed the officials to make all efforts to rescue the child.

“Our first priority is to rescue the child first and then comes taking action against erring officials at all levels,” said the Collector when asked about frequent instances of children falling into uncapped bore wells.
