Warangal: The doctors at Mahatma Gandhi Memorial Hospital (MGMH) on Sunday performed a rare surgery and saved the life of a patient who ate metal objects, plastic material like compact disc and others.

A team of eight doctors headed by Dr Srinivas conducted a two-hour long surgery and removed about 49 different items from the stomach of the patient who was said to be mentally unsound.

The patient is identified as S Ramesh (45) of Rangampet village in Choppadandi mandal of Karimnagar.

After he complained of severe stomach pain, he was first admitted to a private hospital in Karimnagar where the doctors to their astonishment found strange metal objects in his stomach.

Following which the patient was referred to MGMH where he was admitted on Saturday. The team of doctors at MGM Hospital removed objects like pens, pencils, toothbrushes, nuts, bolts, electric cables, discs and other items from his stomach.

Speaking to the media, patient’s wife Bhagya said her husband had been mentally ill for a long time.

He started acting strangely in the recent past and was eating whatever he saw. People were shocked to learn that metal objects were found in his stomach.

Addressing the press persons, Dr Srinivas said, “The surgery is rare and we are happy we could save the patient’s life.”
