Hyderabad: The Telangana government has decided to make its own ‘Land Acquisition Act’ with focus on treating the displaced with a humanitarian point of view.

In the wake of huge tracts of lands to be required for new irrigation projects, Chief Minister K Chandrashekar Rao directed authorities to constitute State-level and district-level committees to oversee the process of land acquisition.

Chief Minister K Chandrashekar Rao held a review meeting on land acquisition issue at Secretariat that was attended by Deputy Chief Minister Mahmud Ali, Irrigation Minister T Harish, Panchayat Raj Minister K Taraka Rama Rao and senior officials of various government departments.

Rao stated that it would be very painful for anyone to part with his own land unless proper compensation was paid. He said his family faced the same problem during construction of Manair Dam. In this backdrop, KCR stressed the need to ensure proper Relief and Rehabilitation (R & R) package for the displaced land.

Further, he felt that the difference between market rate of land and government registration price was very high. Paying compensation as per government rate was nothing but doing injustice. Hence, he suggested compensation amount double the government registration rate in urban and scheduled areas and in other areas one and half the price of the government rates. KCR emphasized on depositing compensation amount directly in bank accounts of the displaced instead of making them run from pillar to post.

Without acquiring land, it was highly impossible to undertake any kind of project, KCR felt. He also told authorities to include provisions to acquire no less than 2000 acres (agricultural land not exceeding 15 percent) for future projects in Telangana.
