Hyderabad: Congress MP from Nalgonda Gutha Sukender Reddy asked the Chief Minister of Telangana K Chandrasekhara Rao to immediately stop power generation at Srisailam power project in the interest of drought-affected farmers of Nalgonda district who were getting ready for the Rabi crop.

In a letter to the Chief Minister on Friday, Sukender Reddy said the Telangana government should adhere to the GO No 69 for maintaining water level at 834 feet. He said the bad monsoons and delayed release of water from Nagarjunasagar severely damaged the standing crops of paddy and cotton, resulting in huge debt for farmers.
Secondly, he sought maintenance of sufficient water level in Nagarjunasagar project for irrigation facilities in Nalgonda district. Power generation from this project led to release of water to Pulichintala project.

As the compensation and rehabilitation process was not completed in the submerged areas of Pulichintala, the release of water had been causing immense hardship to the people. Unless rehabilitation process was not completed, the storage of water in Pulichintala project should not be above 7.5 TMC, the MP told the Chief Minister in the letter. The Srisailam Left Bank Canal is providing drinking water to over 1,000 villages, twin cities of Secunderabad and Hyderabad apart from supplying water to dry crops in Nalgonda district.
