Following the gory incident at Mehdipatnam where the 11-year-old boy Shaik Mustaftuiddin was ruthlessly burnt alive allegedly by Army personnel, NGOs and social activists have given a call to shift the Army Garission from Mehdipatnam to the outskirts of the city. The NGO ‘Help Hyderabad’, headed by former Army officer, Major SGM Quadri represented the matter before the National Minority Commission (NCM), demanding its intervention.

Commenting on the call, Major Quadri said that the civil population had grown beyond limits over the years and it was very necessary for the Army to move out and make way for the civil inflow.

The fact-finding report released by the Civil Liberties Monitoring Committee concluded that the Army must vacate the land.

“It is high time that the Centre and the State government inter¬vene in the matter and take serious steps in withdraw¬ing the military canton¬ments from Hyderabad and Secunderabad areas and shift them to the outskirts of the cities,” the report said.

Both organisations claimed that the Army had allegedly committed excesses on civilians for the past few decades and it is the need of the hour to relocate.
