Warangal: Centre for Indian Trade Union (CITU) district unit leaders expressed serious concern over the non-payment of wages for Indira Kranthi Patham animators (VOAs).

The IKP animators who were called by different names and now called as village organisation assistants (VOAs) have been rendering services since last 16 years but their services were never given due recognition by the state and central governments, said CITU state vice-president M Chukkaiah.

He said though the VOAs were being deployed in the implementation of various government programmes, they were being paid poor wages after a prolonged struggle. Earlier, the government promised to provide a monthly honorarium of Rs 2000 to them, he said. However, the wages for the past 16 months were not paid with the government officials delaying the payments on the pretext of lack of budget. The VOAs play a key role in the implementation of Indira Kranthi Patham under the aegis of Society for Elimination of Rural Poverty (SERP).

Speaking to press persons here on Sunday, Chukkaiah said numerous representations to district administration, officials concerned and the ministers were submitted seeking payment of wages. But none of them responded so far. Upset with the non-responsiveness of the government and officials, the CITU proposed to organise a massive agitation in front of the SERP office in Hyderabad on October 27. All the VOAs should attend the programme in large numbers and make it a success, he appealed.

The agitation would be staged under the banner of IKP (VOA) Employees Association affiliated to CITU, he said.

Chukkaiah said that Telangana Chief Minister K Chandrasekhar Rao during the election campaign promised to enhance the village assistants’ wages to Rs 5000 per month. But there has been no action towards the implementation.
