Karimnagar: Chief Minister K Chandrasekhar Rao has announced in several recent public meetings that his objective is to establish a corruption-free rule in the State. However, the developments in Karimnagar district during the last two months must be upsetting the Chief Minister.

Corruption has become rampant in Karimnagar district. The local people complain that they cannot get works done at the district Collectorate unless they bribe the officials. They allege that the revenue staff fixed price tags for various works. Not just the Revenue Department, the corruption spread to the other departments too.

During the last two months, officials of different departments were caught by the ACB while they were collecting bribes from people. Over a month ago, Manakondur MRO was caught while he was collecting a bribe of Rs 5,000 from a farmer. The local people felicitated the person who got the corrupt MRO trapped by the ACB officials and presented sweets to him. They were so vexed with the MRO that they even celebrated by bursting crackers when he was trapped by the ACB sleuths.

Another official of the excise department was caught by the ACB when he was collecting a bribe of Rs 17,000 from a toddy-tapper to provide him licence for a shop. Deputy DEO trapped The evil of corruption has even spread to the education department.

For the first time in the history of Karimnagar district, an official of the education department was caught while taking a bribe of Rs 5,000 from the management of a school. The management requested the Deputy DEO over phone to provide OMR sheets for conducting examinations.

However, he asked the representatives of the management to meet him at his office and fulfill the ‘formalities’ to secure the OMR sheets.

The school management lodged a complaint with the ACB sleuths. They laid a trap and caught him while he was collecting the bribe amount of Rs 5,000.

There were also instances of Central government officials being caught collecting bribes. The CBI officers recently trapped a Deputy Commissioner of Income Tax Department when he was collecting a bribe of Rs 25 lakh from a tax-payer.
