Hyderabad: The people of Telangana can hope to find relief from power crisis soon as the Telangana State Government has entered into a MoU with Chhattisgarh State government for the supply of 1000 mw of power. Chattisgarh, which is a power surplus State, has also agreed to supply another 1000 mw of power which would be carried to the state via Vidharbha.

Though power is available in Chattisgarh, TS has not been able to get more power as there was no power corridor available between the two States. The TS government thought of laying new high tension lines from Chhattisgarh to Telangana but it could not do so as it was the Power Grid Corporation which had to lay the lines. However, the TS government, according to sources, had succeeded in getting the nod from the Power Grid Corporation to lay new power lines and tenders would be invited very soon. The MoU between TS and Chattisgarh was signed by Chhattisgarh Principal Secretary Aman Kumar and Telangana counterpart SK Joshi at Raipur on Monday in the presence of both the Chief Ministers.

Under the MoU, Chhattisgarh would supply electricity to TS from Madwa Thermal Power Project in Janjgir-Champa district. Based on the price fixed by the Electricity Regulatory Authority, the two states would soon enter into Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) soon. The officials said that tenders would also be invited to set up the transmission lines between the two states in a month as the Power Grid Corporation of India already gave it nod.

Speaking on the occasion, KCR thanked Raman Singh for responding positively to the request for power supply. He hoped that the two states would cooperate in other sectors such as irrigation in the coming days and stressed the need to take up the pending Inchampalli irrigation project in the Godavari River on the Chhattisgarh-Telangana border.

Raman Singh said that as an energy surplus state, it was the responsibility of his state to supply power to the neighbouring states. Before the completion of the transmission line work, he said other lines would be used for the supply of power to Telangana.
