EetelaHyderabad: The Minister for Finance, Eatala Rajender, was found fumbling on Monday as to whether or not the State government scrapped the Bangaru Thalli programme, which was introduced by the Congress government.

The entire opposition grilled the Minister and wanted to know the status of the scheme. He first said the scheme referred to by the members was scrapped and that budget allocations were also not made for it.

The Congress and the other opposition members immediately sprang on their feet and demanded to know how the government could abandon such a big scheme which was brought into force through an Act by the Assembly.

Strongly objecting to the minister’s reply, Opposition Leader K Jana Reddy questioned the fate of the beneficiaries of the scheme if it was annulled. The scheme was launched for the benefit of the poor girls to pursue higher studies, he reminded.

TDP Floor Leader E Dayakar Rao said that it was a much better scheme than the Bangaru Lakshmi scheme since it aimed at educating the girl child. The minister who found himself in a Catch-22 situation took a U-turn and said that the government had not reviewed that scheme and would soon take a view on it and would improve upon it. He tried to assure the House that the scheme was not and would not be scrapped.

Expressing their unhappiness over the minister’s contradictory statements, the Members demanded a detailed report.

Coming to the rescue of the Minister, Harish Rao suggested that the opposition raise the Bangaru Talli issue in a different form.

The scheme falls under the purview of the Women Development and Child Welfare Department. The question on the Kalyana Lakshmi scheme pertained to the Social Welfare Department. He said he failed to understand why two different issues were being taken up and left it to the conscience of the Opposition Leader whether it was justified to ask the question of one department when the House was dealing with a different department.
