Hyderabad: Khammam district tops the list of dengue and malaria cases in the new state of Telangana. This was revealed by Deputy Chief Minister and Health Minister T Rajaiah to the Legislative Council on Monday.

Replying to a question posed by member Ponguleti Sudhakar Reddy (Congress) on strengthening Primary Health Centres (PHCs) in tribal areas, the Minster said 157 cases of dengue had been registered in Khammam district this year, Adilabad following closely with 132 cases, Nizamabad 107 cases and Warangal 55.

Out of the 3,223 cases of malaria registered so far in the current year, Khammam alone accounts for 1,772 cases, the Minister told the Council. Adilabad accounted for 1,022 cases.

The Deputy Chief Minister said he had toured all major tribal areas in the State in the last few weeks to assess the spread of viral diseases. He toured Bhadrachalam (Khammam), Eturu Nagaram (Warangal), Utnoor (Adilabad) and Achchampet (Mahabubnagar). HE informed the House that the 30-bedded hospital at Manuguru in Khammam district had been upgraded to 100-bedded hospital.

He said the K Chandrashekar Rao government had taken a policy decision to increase the number of Health Sub-centres, PHCs and Community Health Centres (CHCs) in the State.

According to him, while one Sub-centre for every population of 5,000 has been the norm, the Telangana government will set up one Sub-centre for every 3,000 population.

Similarly, a PHC will be set up for every 20,000 population whereas the usual norm is to set up one for every 30,000 population. CHCs are set up for every 1,20,000 population, but the Telangana government will set up such CHCs for every 80,000 population. Currently, there are 131 Health Sub-centres and 18 PHCs in tribal areas of the State. Solar lights, drinking water and blood storage facilities will be added to existing PHCs.

The Health Minister said the goal was to bring down the mortality rate from 20,000 per year to 10,000 per year by 2022 in accordance with international norms.

Some PHCs will be upgraded to 30-bedded hospitals. But, he added that increasing bed strength alone would not suffice, the OP departments needed to be strengthened.
