Warangal: Hundreds of employees of public sector banks organised massive protest rallies across the district on Tuesday demanding immediate pay revision and common pension scheme for all employees. The protest was staged as part of the phased zonal strike wherein banks in the southern region—Telangana, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Kerala, Tamil Nadu and Union Territories of Lakshadweep and Puducherry—have gone on a one-day strike. The banking services in the district were hit as about 4,000 employees affiliated to unions like AIBEA, AIBOA, AIBOC, NCBE, NOBW, NOBO and others abstained from work.

At Warangal district headquarters, the bank employees took out a rally from Kakatiya Degree College via Public Gardens, Ambedkar Chourasta and Nakkalagutta to reach the Collectorate where they staged a demonstration. The protesting employees raised slogans by holding placards against the ‘indifferent attitude’ of Indian Banks Association (IBA) which was responsible for settling wages through industry level bipartite agreement with the workmen unions and officers’ associations operating in the banking industry.

Addressing the gathering, United Forum of Bank Unions (UFBU) district convener L Satyanarayana said the wage revision for bank employees was due from November 1, 2012, following the expiry of the last bipartite settlement on October 31, 2012. The common charter of demands, separately for workmen and officers, were submitted by UFBU to IBA on October 30 2012. The formal negotiations started in February 2013 and about 14 rounds of discussions took place between IBA and UFBU so far at the rate of one round of discussion every two months.

Nevertheless, there was no significant progress in the current wage negotiations due to negligent attitude of IBA which in turn has compelled the bank employees to go on strike, Satyanarayana lamented. The IBA should stop making lame excuses and adopt a time-bound approach to hold the negotiations on UFBU demands for conclusion of wage settlement, he said adding if the Centre and IBA failed to address the issue they would give indefinite strike call.

The protesting employees submitted a memorandum to the Joint Collector Pausumi Basu. Leaders of different unions T Rajaiah, K Bikshamaiah, Abdul Sattar, M Samuel, VV Subba Rao, P Chandramouli, M Venkateshwarlu, D Venkteshwaralu, B Krishna Mohan and others were present.
