Hyderabad: Echoing the State government’s intention to block all porn websites, Chairperson for Women’s Commission for Telangana and Andhra Pradesh Tripurana Venkataratnam held pornography as one of the reasons for increase of crime against women.

Speaking at a program on 'Are the young women safe in our Telangana State', organised by Shaheen Women Resource and Welfare Association, she pointed out that this was one of the reasons for increased violence against women. She held that there were seminars and workshops being organised all over the world, but rarely people were pondering the reasons behind the increased violence. “We must ponder if it is internet pornography or effect of cinema or usage smart phones behind increased violence,” she said.

Venkataratnam also stressed on the need for establishing separate directorate in the State to monitor the women being flown to the Gulf countries as house maids and domestic help. “As some of the women during the recent years ended up in trafficking, it is high time the government establishes a separate directorate to monitor the migration,” she emphasised.

Highlighting the scores of issues being faced by Muslim women in the State, she said the Women's Commission pursued the issue of marriage of under aged girls, but Wakf Board, which issues marriage certificates, was reluctant to control the issue. Jameela Nishat, founder and Executive Director Shaheen, Dr Ameena Tahseen, Assistant Professor, MANUU, Rekha Pande, HoD (History), UoH and Ruchika Sharma, Mrs South Asia International 2014 also spoke.
